[B5] Leopold's Ultimate Babylon 5 Episode Viewing Order 2026 [B5]

More than Two Decades in the Making

[G'Kar and Delenn]
Last edited 2026-07-10

What and Why?

This episode order has more than two decades in the making. It is a modification of episode orders released at least in 2006, 2014, 2018, and 2023, followed by yet another rewatch of the series executed in 2025-2026. Finally, I believe I am as happy as I am ever going to be with both seasons 1 and 5. The other seasons have been in the clear already before. This episode order results in as small an amount of internal inconsistencies as possible, and the smoothest flow of the story arc. The most significant changes take place in Season 1: this ultimate episode order solves almost all its issues.

This page is essentially a translated version of this original source, also written by me.

Fields of following tables

Pilot Movie (2257)

The pilot movie The Gathering takes place in 2257, one year before season 1.

There are two versions of the pilot movie: the original 1993 version, and the slightly longer 1998 Special Edition. Both versions have issues, but the recut and rescored Special Edition is a significantly better starting point.

Pilot Movie (2257)
OrigΔProd Blu-Ray Name Reason for moving / Notes
00 - The Gathering The Gathering Image quality of the special edition on the Babylon 5: The Complete Series Blu-Ray box set is horrible. It is obviously sourced from a 4:3 480i NTSC SD videotape, then one quarter of the existing picture is cropped to get an unbelievably unsharp and disgusting 16:9 transfer. Getting Blu-Ray to honestly look worse than VHS copies did at their time, is almost commendable. Fortunately this is not indicative of the picture quality of the actual series.

In my own collection the best version of the pilot is still the Region 1 NTSC DVD I bought in 2001, a double sided disc that includes both The Gathering: Special Edition (4:3) on side 1, and In the Beginning (16:9) on side 2. Even the DVD picture quality is far from what the format is capable of, but it beats the Blu-Ray 6-0.

Also the Region 2 PAL DVD, Babylon 5: The Gathering, released in 2003, is presented in its correct 4:3 aspect ratio and looks somewhat better than the Blu-Ray. This version, however, is the original 1993 version of the pilot, not the 1998 special edition.

Unfortunately my laserdisc players are not functional anymore. It would be interesting to compare the new HD conversions of the series to the old 12-inch NTSC laserdiscs, particularly where special effects are involved. If someone would like to try to attempt a good composite video transfer of Babylon 5 laserdiscs, let me know!

Season 1: "Signs and Portents" (2258), Σ|Δ| = 24

The first season is by far the most problematic as far as the episode order goes. It is by design more loose than the later seasons, and the intent is that the episodes may be watched more or less in any order. Nevertheless, some episodes have clear references to earlier episodes and foreshadowing for what will follow.

In the episode order below I have on one hand strived for as logical progress as possible, and on the other to minimize the amount of changes in the original episode order. Delenn's puzzle game is one big factor, however Signs and Portents cannot be moved right to its logical place because of the date mentioned in the episode.

There are still a couple of potential issues left. One might be that Lennier's adventures in Eyes and The Quality of Mercy are now in consecutive episodes. One might of course think that perhaps Delenn is outside Babylon 5 on a longer trip during these episodes.

Based on the progress of the puzzle game this episode should take place between Legacies and Chrysalis right at the end of the season, but the August date and solving of the raider problem speak for not moving this episode that far. Also the discussion of the selection process of the station commander is better here, before Eyes.

1516 -1 122 S1D3 Eyes References to Raghesh III [MotFL], Bester and Ironheart [MW], Shaal Mayan [TWP], Deathwalker [Dw], sabotage [Surv] and dock worker's strike [BAMN].

Ivanova's dream [MotFL] should be before TKO:ta and the Mars fights before A Voice in the Wilderness.

1618 -2 120 S1D4 A Voice in the Wilderness, Part 1 No puzzle game.

G, T and elevators, part 3/3.

Mars situation places this after [Eyes].

JMS speaks: Actually, this was not the first B5 or Sinclair had heard about the escalating problem on Mars; remember, that was the main reason that Ben Zayn had been sent to B5 in "Eyes," smoking out sympathisers with the Free Mars movement.

Some streaming versions are missing the last act where a triluminary is given to Delenn and Sinclair discusses The Flying Dutchman. The broken version is 40m 58s long and the correct one is 43m 38s. The Blu-Ray contains the full episode.

1921 -2 117 S1D4 The Quality of Mercy JMS speaks: Through a miscommunication, Warners thought TKO was in the slot in which we'd placed Quality [of Mercy], so that went out to TV Guide, and it's now too late to change the order back. Doesn't matter; neither are really arc-stories, though it was hoped to hold back some of Susan's development in TKO just a tad longer.
2014 +6 119 S1D3 TKO Reference to the Euphrates treaty [BttP] and Andrei [also BttP].

"Watch your back..."

2117 +4 115 S1D3 Legacies Puzzle game 1/3.

The triluminary is used [BS].

"Chrysalis".

JMS speaks: Originally, this ep was to be broadcast later in the run, because I didn't want two PsiCorps episodes back-to-back, and for one little detail that will become clearer after "Babylon Squared" airs; it would've been better to have followed that episode, but again, these eps are made to be watched in just about any order, so it's okay in the long run.

Season 2: "The Coming of Shadows" (2259), Σ|Δ| = 4

In season 2 there are only places where two consecutive episodes trade places. They fix two Chekhov's guns that broke with an incorrect broadcast order.

The original episode order of this episode and Soul Mates doesn't work and it isn't supposed to.

Date: 2259-03-14.

JMS speaks: Originally, "Soul Mates" was intended to be broadcast after "A Race Through Dark Places." ARTDP required a rather substantial amount of post production work and audio design; "Mates" did not. Rather than rush "Race," we decided it was okay to air those two in reverse order. If they have aired with "Race" first in the UK, then yes, it's different than the US order, but it *is* the correct production and story order.

3029 +1 208 S2D2 Soul Mates Psi Corps is fired.

Blu-Ray has an annoying lip sync problem for most of the episode.

The Psi Corps is your friend. Trust The Corps.

3839 -1 216 S2D3 Knives Icarus is lifted to the wall.

Franklin to Sheridan: "Seven months ago, you were commanding a starship on the rim, right?" Sheridan was commissioned on Babylon 5 2259-01-08 [PoD], so if that was 7 months ago, we'll be living in August. But the events of the last episode was presented on the ISN TV channel on 2259-09-16 as And Now For a Word. Assuming that the reportage was shown soon after being shot, the events in Knives would happen before [ANfaW] according to the calendar. However, for the story this is the correct place for this episode.

JMS speaks: Actually, the chronological order was *supposed* to be "Knives," THEN "Z'ha'dum." In "Knives" you get the reminder about Anna, then in "Z'ha'dum" you get the payoff. That was originally how they were intended to be aired, but there was *so much* CGI work and rotoscope work and creature animation involved in "Knives" that it got flopped to second in that order. So while it works *best* the way it was intended, it still works okay in this order.

3938 +1 217 S2D3 In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum Icarus is fired.
4040 218 S2D4 Confessions and Lamentations
4141 220 S2D4 Divided Loyalties

Season 3: "Point of No Return" (2260), Σ|Δ| = 6

Like with season 2, only two minor changes have been made, although the benefit of the changes is pretty marginal.

5657 -1 312 S3D3 A Late Delivery from Avalon JMS speaks: We flipped them around because after "Ceremonies" we NEED something lighter, and because York's episode in the new slot now coincides with the first week of sweeps. They were written to play in either order.

6062 -2 318 S3D4 Walkabout Kosh is lifted to the wall.

JMS speaks: Initially we'd wanted to put Walkabout in first, but that would have meant airing only WWE1 in that sweeps period, and having to wait until the fall for part 2, which seemed not only excessive but remarkably stupid. So we reversed the shooting/airing order to accommodate that, and the fact that we knew we'd need a LOT of EFX in WWE1, and this would give us time to do it properly.

Season 4: "No Surrender, No Retreat", (2261), Σ|Δ| = 0

In season 4 there are no changes from the original broadcast order. However, the final episode of season 4, and the series, Sleeping in Light, was moved to the end of fifth season when the fifth season was, against all expectations, greenlit at the eleventh and a half-th hour. As a consequence, a new final episode for season 4, Deconstruction of Falling Stars, was hastily written and shot along the first season 5 episodes. This explains its production number which is not 422 but 501.

Season 5: "The Wheel of Fire" (2262), Σ|Δ| = 2

The only change to the episode order is moving around the only episode of the last 3+ seasons of Babylon 5 not written by JMS, Neil Gaiman's Day of the Dead that is. Finding this exact location for this episode took over two decades, but finally it is not in conflict with any other episode, and it doesn't interrupt the main story at a bad place.

Note! This episode was originally shot to be at the end of the final fourth season. When season 5 was surprisingly greenlit, and before the episode had been broadcast, it was yanked from the end of season 4 here so that it would stay the final episode of the whole series.

TV-elokuvat

I recommend watching other TV movies apart from the pilot movie The Gathering after the series proper, if at all. The spirit of Babylon 5 has really not come through to these movies, with the possible exception of In the Beginning.
