Varjojen paratiisi: Ehdotus Babylon 5:n katselujärjestykseksi

Mikä ja miksi?

Tämä katselujärjestys perustuu mm. vuonna 2006, 2014, 2018 ja 2023 tekemiini katselujärjestysehdotuksiin, ja vuonna 2025 ja 2026 tapahtuvaan koko sarjan uudelleenkatsomiseen. Siinä on pyritty mahdollisimman pieneen määrään sisäisiä ristiriitoja ja mahdollisimman loogiseen tarinankerrontaan. Suurimmat muutokset tulevat ykköskaudelle, jonka kaikki loogiset ongelmat tämän jaksojärjestyksen pitäisi ratkaista.

Ainoa ongelma jää puolestaan viidennelle kaudelle, jossa on yksi jakso, joka ei täysin saumattomasti sovi mihinkään kohtaan tarinajatkumoa.

Pilottielokuva The Gathering sijoittuu vuoteen 2257, vuotta ennen itse sarjan ensimmäistä tuotantokautta.

Pilotista on olemassa kaksi versiota: alkuperäinen vuoden 1993 versio ja hieman pidempi Special Edition vuodelta 1998. Molemmissa versioissa on ongelmia, mutta uudelleen leikattu ja uudella musiikkiraidalla varustettu Special Edition on selvästi parempi.

Ensimmäinen tuotantokausi on jaksojen järjestyksen suhteen selvästi ongelmallisin. Se on suunniteltu löyhemmäksi kuin myöhemmät kaudet, ja jaksot on tarkoitus pystyä katsomaan enemmän tai vähemmän epäjärjestyksessä. Joissain jaksoissa kuitenkin viittaillaan menneisiin tapahtumiin tai vihjaillaan tulevasta.

Alla olevassa jaksojärjestyksessä on pyritty samaan aikaan mahdollisimman loogiseen tarinankerrontaan, ja toisaalta mahdollismman pieneen määrään muutoksia jaksojärjestyksessä. Suurin jaksoja uudelleenjärjestävä yksittäinen tekijä on Delennin palapeli, joka siirtää etenkin kauden nimijakson Signs and Portentsin merkittävästi myöhäisemmäksi verrattuna alkuperäiseen esitysjärjestykseen.

Toisella tuotantokaudella muutokset ovat vähäisiä ja vain kahden peräkkäistne jakson uudelleenjärjestelyjä. Molemmissa tapauksessa on kyse nk. Chekovin aseen periaatteen toteuttamisesta: jos kohtauksessa yksi esitellään ase, pitää sitä myöhäisemmässä kohtauksessa myös käyttää. Vastaavasti jos asetta käytetään jossain kohtauksessa, pitää sen olla katsojalle / lukijalle tuttu jo aiemmasta kontekstista.

Kahdessa jaksojärjestyksen vaihdossa on kyse juuri Chekovin aseen säännöstä: asian esittely on siirretty oikealle paikalleen ennen kuin sitä käytetään.

Tälle kaudelle ei ole yhtä ainoaa siirtoa alkuperäisestä katsomisjärjestyksestä. Sen sijaan jo ennen ensiesitystä kauden ja koko sarjan viimeiseksi tarkoitettu jakso, Sleeping in Light, siirrettiin viidennen kauden loppuun kun varmistui, että viides tuotantokausi sittenkin saadaan. Tämän takia kauden nyt päättävä jakso, Desconstruction of Falling Stars, onkin itse asiassa kuvattu yhdessä viidennen tuotantokauden jaksojen kanssa ja hätäisesti liimattu neljännen kauden loppuun, minkä huomaa esimerkiksi jakson tuotantonumerosta 501.

Ainoa muutos jaksojärjestykseen on kolmen viimeisen kauden ainoa jakso, joka ei ole JMS:n käsikirjoittama, eli Neil Gaimanin Day of the Dead. Ongelmana on se, että jakso ei ihan tarkkaan ottaen sovi mihinkään kohtaan täysin kivuttomasti, vaikka sitä on eri katsomiskerroilla yritetty sovittaa eri paikkoihin. Ei jaksi tähänkään kohtaan täysin sovi, mutta sijoittamalla se mahdollisimman aikaiseen kohtaan se saadaan katsottua ennen kuin kauden vauhti alkaa kiihtyä ja jaksojen jatkuvuus kasvaa intensiiviseksi.

TV-elokuvat

Muut TV-elokuvat kuin pilottielokuva The Gathering kannattaa katsoa sarjan päätteeksi, jos silloinkaan. Babylon 5:n henki ei ole tahtonut ollenkaan suodattua näihin läpi, In the Beginningiä ehkä lukuun ottamatta.

In the Beginning (1998) on TV-elokuvista selvästi paras. Se kertoo taustoja ja sisältää hyviä kohtauksia, mutta siinä on turhan paljon yhteensattumia. Sisältää spoilereita neljännen kauden loppuun, joten se kannattaa katsoa joko neljännen kauden päätteeksi, tai vaihtoehtoisesti kaikkein ensimmäisenä, jolloin spoilereista ehtii suurimman osan unohtaa, kun niiden merkitystä ei vielä ymmärrä.
Thirdspace (1998) on typerä eikä sovi mihinkään kohtaa neljättä kautta, johon se kuitenkin ajoittuu, ja kannattaa jättää katsomatta.
The River of Souls (1998) on pitkästyttävä ja sisältää aivan kammottavan noloa huumoria. Sijoittuu viidennen kauden jälkeiseen aikaan.
A Call to Arms (1999) toimii pilottijaksona heti alkuun kesken jääneelle Crusade-TV-sarjalle. Sijoittuu viidennen kauden jälkeiseen aikaan.

The Road Home (2023) on outo tapaus. En oikein tiedä, kenelle se on tarkoitettu. En usko, että sarjaa tuntematon saa siitä mitään selvää, ja sarjan tuntevalle se taas tuntuu tarpeettomalle. Sijoittuu viidennen kauden jälkeiseen aikaan.
