On 18.05.2025, there was a significant change in structure of Modeemi network:
- A multilayer network switch WS-C6503, that has been our club's gateway for a long time, changed it's purpose. Now it operates as a switch for 1Gb devices used in the clubroom
- Now the Mikrotik CCR2004-16G-2S+ is serving as our gateway. The new appliance has two SFP+ and 16 Gigabit ethernet interfaces.
Main idea behind the change is to:
- Provide foundation to migrate our network from 1Gb to 10Gb port speed
- Provide stateful firewall, that brings more possibilities into our network, for example allowing for incoming replies, for UDP communication initiate from inside the network, where ephemeral inbound UDP ports are blocked.
Network performance is being monitored as part of the final evaluation of the new appliance's suitability.
Initial tests performed before the swap proven, that the CCR2004-16G-2S+ is able to perform routing between two SFP+ interfaces, with pretty complicated VLAN configuration present on those ports, with ~9.2-9.4Gb/s speeds (that is near line rate), with CPU under 20% of load.
